We have a Chilean car and we need advice!

Hello!

We are couple from California and travelled through South America last year (Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru).

We purchased a car in January 2015 in Santiago, Chile (Its a 2004 Subaru Outback). After travelling through the countries listed above we finally reached Lima,Peru in April. Due to personal reasons we had to cut short our trip in Lima and head back to California.

Our original car posting (http://www.drivetheamericas.com/forums/awd-2005-subaru-outback-peru)

We decided to leave the car behind since we could not sell it in Lima. As many of you might know, Peru has a 5 year age restrcition on importing cars. We did all the necessary paperwork required with the Peruvian customs and parked it at a friends place. We decided to comeback later and drive it back into Chile to sell it.

We are now planning to finally do it. However, we missed one key aspect of the entire process. Our official car registration (patente) and the techincal inspection report (revision tecnica) from Chile have now expired. We tried renewing it online but it would not allow us to do it without first renewing the Revision Tecnica. The problem with the revision tecnica is that the car needs to be physically present in Chile to renew it.

So, we are now stuck in this situation where I am afraid the customs will not let us bring the car back in Chile because of expired papers. I am not even sure what the exact reaction from customs at the border will be since this is not a normal situation that they face everyday.

We contacted the registro civil in Santiago. According to them the customs will impose a penalty on us for lapsed paperwork (registration) when we enter. But they might not allow us to drive it without a valid Revision Tecnica. We are still trying to find a way to get in touch with the chilean aduanas.

Would you have any suggestion/advice for us. We are really trying hard to figure this situation out and find a way out of it.

Any advice will be very very helpful.

Thanks.

your car

Is it possible to contact the officials in Arica to make arrangements to have the car inspected as soon as you enter Chile? Perhaps you can get some sort of commitment letter from them so customs will let you through. I have had good and bad experiences with Chilean customs. Sometimes it depends entirely on the agent you get. Some are great others are stupid. Good luck.
